   Today I was not in Western Civ class due to a basketball game.

Why do People Migrate?

    Today in class we discussed things that would drive someone to or from a country (push/pull factors) and got our information from the World FactBook. We looked at the total fertility rate of countries (average number of babies). For a population to remain the same, the TFR must be 2.1. If it is greater than this number, the population increases; if it is less than this number, the population decreases. The world TFR is 2.42, meaning our world population is increasing. However, TFR only accounts for infants, and disregards things like immigration. Nigeria's TFR is 6.89 showing how the developing country is increasing and that the average woman has about 6 kids. We also looked at other things on the FactBook like the U.S. population (which is 326, 625, 791). We also looked at other things like obesity rate in France, the U.S., and Japan. Rome and Politics

    Today in class, we talked more about Tarquin and his story. It is all pretty corrupted. Tarquin's families behavior made the people of Rome NEVER want to be ruled by a king again. The rule of the kings was replaced by two consuls. The consuls could veto each other, and were elected officials. They were in office were one year, and they were always aristocrats. All patricians traced their descent from a famous ancestor, or pater (father). Their duties were dealing justice, making law, and commanding the army. Since the consul's had the ability to veto each other, the power was reduced among one of the individuals. Plebeians dominated 98% of the population, but the patricians (2%) dominated most of the government. Plebeians were forced to serve in the army, and could not hold office. Ancient Greece Terms

     Today in class we learned about terms and life in ancient Greece. We learned that an agora was a central public space for gatherings, assemblies, and a  marketplace. A polis is political entities ruled by their bodies of citizens. The year 508 B.C. was very important to the ancient Greeks because it was the year when they were first introduced to democracy. This was also the first time people revolted against their ruler. Socrates was a Greek philosopher who was responsible for the fundamentals of modern western philosophy. Socrates fought in the Peloponnesian war, met with young students, helped the creation of the scientific method, and he was a stone mason. Socrates was killed by drinking poison hemlock, after he was convicted of impiety. The jury had 500 people and the guilty vs. non-guilty was 279-221.
